From Generator to Glass — and What Happens to the Extra Gas

Ozonated water is simply water with ozone gas dissolved into it — a powerful oxidizer used for washing produce, sanitizing surfaces, and treating water, generated fresh on demand and reverting naturally to plain oxygen. Making it well comes down to four things: the right generator, the right way of dissolving the gas, timing, and managing the ozone that does not dissolve. This guide walks through all four.

Ozone Gas vs. Ozonated Water

Ozone (O₃) is an energized form of oxygen that reacts readily with whatever it touches — that reactivity is the entire point. Dissolved into water, it oxidizes contaminants and then breaks back down into ordinary oxygen, leaving no chemical residue behind. In air, that same reactivity is why airborne ozone is treated as an exposure problem, not a benefit. Ozonating water creates two outputs: ozonated water, and excess ozone gas. A complete setup manages both.

Safety first: Ozone has established uses in water treatment and sanitation. Airborne ozone requires exposure control because inhalation can irritate and damage respiratory tissue. Keep ozone out of your breathing zone, ventilate the area, and manage the off-gas — the sections below show how, and the ozone safety guide goes deeper.

The Equipment

1. An Ozone Generator

The machine that produces the gas. The Tri-Oxy COMPLETE generates 5 g/hr and mixes ozone into flowing tap water automatically. (The smaller Tri-Oxy FRESH 800 mg/hr unit is retired from sale — owners will find parts and help on the legacy support page.)

2. A Way to Dissolve the Gas

Ozone does not dissolve just by touching water. Venturi injection (built into the COMPLETE) mixes gas and water under flow, reaching roughly 90% saturation — as high as 6 ppm. Bubbling through a diffuser stone is the small-batch method: simple, but only about 15% of the gas dissolves.

3. The Right Vessel

Ozone attacks many plastics and rubbers. Use glass — like the non-toxic 32 oz mason jar — and ozone-rated tubing and fittings, all available under ozone accessories.

4. Off-Gas Management

The ~85% of bubbled ozone that does not dissolve has to go somewhere. The Tri-Oxy® REFRESH degassing kit screws onto the jar and destroys the excess gas as it escapes — so the ozone goes in the water, not in your room air.

Making It: Bubbling vs. Venturi

Small batches (bubbling): connect the generator to the diffuser stone inside a glass jar of water, fit the REFRESH degassing cap, run the generator, and let fine bubbles rise through the water. Finer bubbles dissolve more gas — a 0.5 micron diffuser transfers ozone faster and needs roughly half the run time of a 50–60 micron stone. Cold water holds ozone considerably better than warm, so start cold.

Continuous supply (venturi): a flow-through system like the Tri-Oxy COMPLETE draws ozone into moving water and delivers ozonated water on demand at roughly 1–5 ppm — no jar, no waiting, and dissolve rates bubbling cannot reach. That is the difference between making a glass and treating a garden.

Use it fresh. Dissolved ozone reverts to plain oxygen on its own — roughly within half an hour at cool room temperature, faster in warm water. That self-destruction is a feature (no residue), but it means ozonated water is made for the moment, not stored.

Why There’s an Ozonator on My Kitchen Counter

I designed the Tri-Oxy line because I wanted oxidation power without chemical residue — produce washed in something stronger than tap water that leaves nothing behind but oxygen. Years later the routine hasn’t changed: berries and greens get an ozonated rinse, jars and surfaces get sanitized, and the degassing cap I engineered keeps the excess gas out of my kitchen air. My quality-assurance background shows here too — the Tri-Oxy COMPLETE testing and diffuser testing are published for you to read, not summarized into slogans.

Ozonated Water Questions, Answered

How long does ozonated water stay potent?
Dissolved ozone breaks back down into oxygen on its own — as a rule of thumb, within about half an hour at cool room temperature, and faster in warm water. Make it fresh and use it promptly rather than storing it.
Do I need a diffuser stone?
For bubbling into a jar, yes — the stone breaks the gas into fine bubbles so more of it contacts the water. Finer pores dissolve more: a 0.5 micron diffuser needs about half the run time of a 50–60 micron stone. Venturi systems like the COMPLETE dissolve ozone in the flow itself, no stone needed.
What happens to the ozone that doesn’t dissolve?
In open bubbling, roughly 85% of the gas escapes above the water — into your room air unless it is managed. That is exactly what the Tri-Oxy® REFRESH degassing cap exists for: it destroys the excess gas at the jar instead of letting it accumulate where you breathe.
Venturi or bubbling — which dissolves more ozone?
Venturi injection, by a wide margin: moving water shears the gas into solution at roughly 90% saturation (up to about 6 ppm), while diffusion bubbling dissolves only around 15%. Bubbling wins on simplicity and cost for small batches; venturi wins on strength and volume.
Can you drink ozonated water?
Freshly ozonated, cold water is consumed by many users, and questions about safety, timing, and evidence deserve their own careful answer — see drinking ozonated water for that discussion.
