Foam Rollers for Lower Back Pain

Passive Spinal Exercise with Foam Rollers

Foam rolls are standard home fitness tools that promote myofascial release and are not specifically known for fixing chronic low back and neck pain.

Our patented foam rolls have a different purpose and effect, because they promote proper curvature of the spine, which reduces tension, tightness, and low back and neck pain. Simply lay over the rolls and relax while your muscles release and your bones shift.

Other foam rolls crunch the spinous and lack design features to remold the spinal column. Our rolls act like a spinal support brace with a specialized groove to guide the lumbar and cervical vertebrae. The groove supports the vertebrae transverse process while simultaneously letting the spinous float. The body's weight in the supine (lying position) over strategically positioned rolls relieves tight muscles so the vertebrae can shift and settle into a healthier position and curvature. Picture a locomotive (train) moving down the train track, being guided in the correct direction. Shape is critical because you can never change the muscle bone attachment points, and tight muscles mean the vertebrae are in the wrong position. Our spinal fitness foam rolls provide the passive guidance you need to remold the spine's shape for the first time.

The Back Shaper rolls come in five (5) different diameters and three (3) different densities. Back rolls are twelve (12) inches long.

Why Shape is Important

The spine is a mechanical device meant to function in gravity with the least muscle expenditure and joint strain. Unfortunately, individuals with low back pain lack proper posture and core body strength. It takes enormous amounts of energy to hold the human body erect because of gravity. Having forward head posture or the body's trunk too far forward over the hips can increase low back muscle effort by hundreds of pounds.

Muscles tighten to keep the body's trunk from hitting the ground, which becomes painful over time. The S-shape in the human spine provides up to a 15:1 mechanical advantage. Due to this, multiple muscles can be at rest instead of tightening to hold the body erect.

Good Posture

With the S-shaped spine the head is centered over the hips, less back muscles are needed to stand erect, and less compressive weight goes through your spine.

The solution for low back pain is to get the S-shaped spine.

Bad Posture

The more forward your trunk and head are from your hips the more weight you'll carry on your neck, and the more the low back muscles will tighten. The more weight you carry, the more your discs, vertebrae, and nerves are damaged. A spine that has a proper curve is a spine without pain!

Why the Back Shaper Rolls Work

The back-twist exercise allows the center of the spinal discs to assume their fluid state. In this state, the spine is best able to appropriately “mold” using the neck and back shaper rolls (spinal brace supports). The spinal muscles relax when the disc centers settle into their gelled state after 20 minutes of non-motion while lying over the rolls. The entire body is then prepared for restful, productive sleep.

Use the neck and back shaper spinal support rolls for acute injuries or just comfortable relaxation to promote healing and maintain correct posture. The rolls may be used once or several times a day, but the goal should be use them at least 20 minutes per session, usually after a game, workout, or before sleeping. In the beginning start with 5 minutes per session until your spine accommodates to the new shape.

The pain and symptoms associated with the misalignment of spinal vertebrae can often be controlled with the proper application of specific neck shaper spinal rolls. As stated, the rolls come in five different diameters and three different densities. Generally, use a soft smaller diameter roll to promote healing and restoration. Use a firmer and larger diameter roll in a healthy spine as curvature improves.

Proper spinal curves increase the leverage and mechanical advantage of the spine up to 15 times more than a spine without correct curvature moving in gravity. Loss of curvature dramatically increases the possibility of spinal injury due to the loss of strength in the affected area. Restoration and maintenance of normal spinal curves are essential for vertebrae to remain in normal alignment.

The back-twist exercise promotes normal metabolic action of intervertebral discs and ligaments. Individuals with spinal injuries should never twist if pain occurs; and they should only lie on the spinal brace rolls. Please consult your physician before using the back shaper spinal support rolls or performing the back-twist exercise.

How to Perform the Back Twist

(Click (+) below to expand or contract.)

1. While sitting, arch the lower back and raise your chin. Raise arms to shoulder level with elbows bent out to the side.  (+)

2. Twist your entire spine leading with your head both ways. Use your eyes to look backward as you twist. Imagine a straight vertical rod going through your head down to the chair. Rotate without leaning to the left or right. (+)

3. Repeat this motion 25-30 times, once in the morning and once before bed, at which time you should lie on the neck and back shaper spinal brace rolls for 20 minutes immediately. (+)

4.  Lie down on our neck and low back foam rollers to promote restoration and/or maintenance of spinal curvature, and prepare the spine for restful sleep. (+)
