Wildfire haze, last night’s cooking, a smoker in the house — every kind of smoke is a mix of fine particulates and gaseous compounds, and the two behave completely differently in your air. The Two Halves of Every Smoke Problem

The Particles (PM2.5)

The visible haze and the fraction that reaches deep into lungs — fine particulates. This half responds to particle-focused cleaning: fan-driven HEPA filtration for big rooms, and ionization that clumps and settles airborne particles for personal spaces. Wildfire smoke is dominated by this half.

The Gases (VOCs & Odors)

The smell — acrolein, benzene derivatives, and the rest of smoke’s chemistry — is gas-phase, passing straight through particle filters. The Wildfire-Season Playbook

  • Keep outdoor smoke out: close windows and doors, seal obvious gaps, and run HVAC on recirculate during smoke events.
  • Concentrate on the room you sleep in: one well-served bedroom beats a whole house half-treated — a portable unit on the nightstand covers the eight hours that matter most.
  • Ventilate strategically, not constantly: when outdoor air clears (check your local AQI), flush the house; when it is smoky, keep it sealed and let air cleaning work.
  • Mind the indoor sources too: cooking without the range hood adds its own particulate and VOC load right when outdoor air already has you sealed in.

I live and work in Washington wildfire country — late summer here means checking the AQI the way other people check the weather. The smoke playbook above is what my own household runs: sealed house, recirculated air, and the Breathe Safe moving between my desk and my nightstand while the valley haze does its worst. What actually removes wildfire smoke from indoor air?
Sealing the house plus particle-focused air cleaning carries most of the load, because wildfire smoke is dominated by fine particulates. Add gas-phase treatment for the lingering smell, and flush with outdoor air only when the AQI clears.
Why does the smoke smell stay after the haze is gone?
Because the smell is gas-phase VOCs, not particles — it outlasts the visible fraction and passes through particle filters untouched. Gases call for ventilation, carbon, or ion/plasma interaction; the VOC guide covers the options.
Can one device handle cigarette smoke?
Tobacco smoke is heavy on both halves, so look for tested performance on both: the Breathe Safe publishes particulate (99.68% PM2.5) and gas (86.4% TVOC) results separately. Nothing beats removing the source, but the airborne load is treatable.
Cooking smoke keeps setting off my alarm — will a purifier fix it?
