The Breathe Safe Oxygen Test, Explained
One Breathe Safe® laboratory report measured the oxygen in the air right at the unit — and it is the most misread number we publish. The test recorded oxygen roughly 17% higher in the air a few centimeters above the running device, compared with routine room air, under the report’s calibration. That is a real, signed measurement. It is also a measurement of the air at the outlet — not of anything happening inside your body. Here is exactly what the number is, what it is not, and why we retired the larger figure that used to circulate with it.
The oxygen report (SCT-A20161213-002N) used a published zinc-air-battery sensor method to compare the oxygen in the air 3 cm directly above the running unit against routine laboratory air, over about five minutes. Its finding, in the lab’s own words, was that oxygen there was “enhanced about 17%” — and the lab explicitly noted this as a reference measurement, not a room-wide or sustained result.
If routine room air is the 100% baseline, then air measured about 17% higher reads as roughly 118% of that reference air. That is the same single reading expressed two ways, rounded — the oxygen concentration in the air stream right at the unit. It is a fact about the air the device puts out, measured at the outlet.
Here is the part that matters most, stated plainly:
A localized air-concentration measurement, taken a few centimeters above the unit, under one report’s calibration. It describes the air at that point — nothing more, and nothing less.
It is not a room-wide oxygen level, not a sustained figure, and not a statement about the oxygen in your blood or your body. An air purifier measures air; it does not measure or change your physiology.
For a while, marketing around this unit stretched the single reference reading into a “70–118%” range. That range was an extrapolation beyond what the report measured — the laboratory took one localized reading, and the wider figure read more into it than the data supports. So we retired it.
The defensible statement is the one the report actually backs: oxygen measured about 17% higher in the air directly above the running unit — roughly 118% of the reference room air — under the published calibration, as a reference measurement. That is the number we stand behind, and the only oxygen figure that belongs on any Breathe Safe page.
I spent my early career in nuclear-plant quality assurance, where a claim is only ever as good as the document behind it — and where a number that outruns its test is a liability, not a selling point. When I saw the “70–118%” range being used, I pulled it, because the oxygen report supports one careful reading, not a sweeping one. I would rather publish the modest, real measurement and explain it honestly than lean on a figure I could not defend line by line. The strong Breathe Safe results — the VOC, particulate, airborne-bacteria and ion figures, each measured under its tested conditions — do not need the oxygen figure inflated to carry their weight.
