Why Glass Can Break From Warm Liquid
Thermal shock occurs when one section of the glass heats much faster than another
Glass expands as it becomes warmer. When hot coffee or another warm liquid strikes the bottom of a room-temperature or cold jar, the bottom surface can begin expanding before the surrounding glass.
This unequal expansion creates internal stress. If the stress becomes greater than the glass can tolerate, the jar may crack, fracture, or suddenly break.
