The Half of the System Nobody Talks About

Ozonating water creates two outputs: ozonated water, and excess ozone gas. Water treatment plants solve the second output with destruct units; most home setups ignore it entirely. This guide explains what an ozone destructor is, how industrial off-gas control works, and what the same job looks like at kitchen scale — so the gas you didn’t dissolve never becomes the air you breathe.

Where Off-Gas Comes From

Ozone generator → diffuser → water → ozonated water  +  undissolved ozone gas → destructor / degasser

Bubbling ozone through a diffuser dissolves only about 15% of the gas — contact time is short and bubbles rise fast. The other ~85% breaks the surface and keeps rising, into the room. Every serious ozone system, from municipal plants to a mason jar on a counter, has to answer the same question: what happens to the gas that didn’t dissolve?

How the Pros Destroy It — and How You Can

Industrial: Catalytic & Thermal Destruct Units

Municipal and industrial ozone systems capture off-gas from sealed contact tanks and run it through ozone destruct units — catalytic beds (or heat) that convert O₃ back to ordinary O₂ before venting. Engineered, monitored, and sized for grams-per-hour flows.

Small-Scale: Degassing at the Container

The same job at household scale: seal the vessel and route the rising off-gas through a medium that destroys ozone before the air leaves the jar. That is precisely what the Tri-Oxy® REFRESH degassing kit does — a glass jar, a diffuser, and a screw-on cap whose degassing material neutralizes the excess gas at the source.

Honest scale note: a screw-on degassing cap is not an industrial catalytic destruct unit — it is the same principle, sized for the liters you actually ozonate at home. For commercial flows, systems like the Tri-Oxy COMPLETE dissolve ozone by venturi injection in the first place (~90% into the water), which shrinks the off-gas problem before it starts.

Why I Engineered the Degassing Cap

When I started making ozonated water in the late 1990s, nobody talked about the gas above the jar — you smelled it, your throat caught it, and everyone pretended that was normal. My nuclear background would not let me pretend. If a treatment plant would never vent raw ozone, why should a kitchen? The REFRESH cap exists because the off-gas is not a side effect to tolerate — it is half the system, and it deserved engineering.

Off-Gas Questions, Answered

What is an ozone destructor?
A device that converts excess ozone (O₃) back into ordinary oxygen (O₂) before air is released — catalytic or thermal units on industrial systems, degassing media at household scale. Same chemistry, different sizes.
Do I need off-gas control at home?
If you bubble ozone into open containers, yes — about 85% of the gas escapes into your room air otherwise. A degassing cap handles it at the container, which beats ventilating it away after it has already reached your breathing zone.
How long does degassing media last?
The REFRESH degassing granules keep working until they stop destroying ozone — typically 5 to 10 years depending on use. Replacement is a simple refill, not a new system.
Is a degassing cap the same as an industrial destruct unit?
No — and we won’t pretend otherwise. Industrial catalytic destructors are engineered for continuous grams-per-hour flows from sealed contact tanks. A degassing cap applies the same principle at mason-jar scale: destroy the excess at the source. Right tool, right size.

Manage Both Outputs

Ozonating the Water Is Only Half the System

The Tri-Oxy® REFRESH kit destroys the excess gas right at the jar — so everything ozone offers ends up in the water, and nothing ends up in your lungs.
