Respect the Gas, Use the Water — a Practical Exposure Guide
Ozone is useful precisely because it is reactive — and that same reactivity is why inhaling it matters. Ozone has established uses in water treatment and sanitation. Airborne ozone requires exposure control because inhalation can irritate and damage respiratory tissue. This guide explains where the line sits: how much airborne ozone is considered acceptable, how ventilation and off-gas control keep you under it, and how to get everything ozone offers without breathing it.
Ozone in water and ozone in air are not the same situation. Dissolved in water, ozone oxidizes what is in the water and then reverts to oxygen — the established, useful case. In air, the same molecule meets your airway tissue first. The master rule of every well-designed ozone setup: use ozone where you want oxidation; control ozone where you don’t want exposure.
Occupational guidelines put workplace airborne ozone around 0.1 ppm averaged over a work shift — a small number, which is the point. You can smell ozone well below harmful levels (that sharp after-thunderstorm scent), so odor is an early cue, not a crisis — but persistent strong odor means improve ventilation or fix the off-gas control.
Work in ventilated spaces, keep generation equipment away from your breathing zone, and for continuous or commercial use, consider an ozone monitor — inexpensive sensors give real numbers instead of guesses.
Running a generator to deodorize a room is an unoccupied-space technique: people, pets, and plants out, seal the space, and after the cycle ends allow roughly 30 minutes or more for the ozone to revert to oxygen before re-entering.
Bubbling ozone into water dissolves only about 15% of the gas — the rest escapes above the container, straight toward whoever is standing there. That excess is a job for ozone off-gas control: destroy it at the source with the Tri-Oxy® REFRESH degassing kit instead of ventilating it away after the fact.
