What Is a Neutral Spine? (It’s Not Straight)

By Eileen Durfee, inventor & Nationally Certified Spinal Fitness Specialist

“Neutral spine” gets misread as “straight spine.” It is the opposite: neutral means your three natural curves are present and in balance, not flattened out.

Neutral = the curves, in balance

A neutral spine holds a gentle forward curve in the neck (cervical lordosis), a backward curve in the upper back (thoracic kyphosis), and a forward curve in the low back (lumbar lordosis). Together they form the S-shape that lets your body manage gravity, share load across joints, and move with less muscular effort. Flatten those curves in the name of “straight” and you lose the very mechanics neutral is supposed to provide.

How to find and train it

  • Restore each curve (rolling, pelvic tilts, neck flexion) rather than forcing the spine straight.
  • Support the curves under load so daily movement reinforces neutral instead of erasing it.

Fix the structure, not just the symptom

The 5-step Spinal Fitness system restores the curves that carry load.
