A sauna is also a breathing environment. For twenty or forty minutes you sit in a small, warm, enclosed space breathing faster than usual — so the air in that space deserves the same attention as the heat. Here is what actually determines sauna air quality, without the fear-marketing.
What changes about air inside a sauna
- Temperature and humidity rise — your own sweat humidifies a small enclosure quickly, which changes how the air feels to breathe.
- You breathe more — heat elevates heart and respiratory rate; add movement and ventilation matters twice as much.
- The enclosure participates — whatever the walls, floor coverings, and hardware are made of, you are sharing warm air with them. This is why materials selection and testing matter (see what happens to sauna materials when they get hot).
Ventilation in a small sauna, practically
- Refresh between sessions. Open the enclosure and let it fully air out after every use — and dry it; trapped moisture is how fabric enclosures grow problems.
- Site it in decent air. A tent inherits the room’s air. A ventilated bedroom corner beats a musty basement corner every time.
- Crack the door for long or active sessions. Radiant heat warms you, not primarily the air — so a partially opened flap trades very little warmth for a lot of fresh air, especially during exercise sessions.

Should I run an air purifier in a sauna?

Does the sauna smell when new?
Quality tested materials should have little odor, and any faint newness fades with airing. A strong persistent chemical smell from any sauna product is your cue to ask its maker for materials testing — ours is published.
