Understanding the different types of saunas

All saunas warm the body, but they do it in different ways — which affects comfort, air temperature, session length, and the balance between radiant and convective heat. Knowing your type helps you prepare.

An incandescent lamp differs from panel heaters because its tungsten filament emits a continuous spectrum — amber, orange, visible red, deep red, and near, mid, and thermal infrared — more like a natural heat source than the narrow band of an LED. In a reflective, insulated enclosure such as the Sauna Fix® design, direct radiant energy, reflected radiant energy, and warming air combine into a different thermal environment than either a Finnish or a panel-style sauna. What’s happening

What happens inside your body during a session

Your body keeps its core temperature remarkably stable — normally around 98.6°F (37°C) — and a shift of even one or two degrees triggers protective responses. During a sauna you deliberately let core temperature rise slightly while your body activates cooling systems to prevent overheating. This is thermoregulation, coordinated by the hypothalamus, which reads temperature receptors in your skin, muscles, and organs and asks a single question: is the body gaining heat faster than it can lose it? When the answer is yes, several systems switch on at once — more blood flow to the skin, sweat glands, a faster and stronger heartbeat, and hormonal adjustments — all automatically.

Minutes 0–2 — the first heat signal. Your skin absorbs heat and skin temperature climbs almost immediately. In an incandescent near-infrared sauna, radiant energy reaches your skin directly, some reflects within the enclosure, and the cabin air gradually warms.

Minutes 2–5 — blood flow shifts. Small skin arteries relax and widen (vasodilation), sending warm blood from your core toward the surface where heat can leave the body. Skin can look pink or flushed — a visible sign of increased circulation.

Minutes 5–10 — the heart works harder. With blood diverted to the skin for cooling, the heart pumps faster and more forcefully to maintain circulation everywhere else. This is why sauna bathing is sometimes compared to moderate activity — though it does not replace exercise; the two create different stimuli.

Minutes 10–15 — sweat glands turn on. Your two-to-four million eccrine glands begin releasing sweat under hypothalamic control. And crucially, sweat itself doesn’t cool you — evaporation does. Converting liquid sweat to vapor pulls heat from your skin, which is also why a humid sauna feels hotter: sweat evaporates more slowly, so less heat leaves.

  • Increased blood flow to the skin
  • Activation of millions of sweat glands
  • Higher heart rate and cardiac output
  • Hormonal adjustments to conserve fluid and salt
  • Behavioral cues — thirst and the urge to cool down

Deeper still, cells raise heat shock proteins that help stabilize and refold other proteins — part of how the body adapts to repeated heat.

Fuel and fluids

Hydration, electrolytes, and blood sugar

By 15–20 minutes your body is in full thermoregulation mode, spending energy just to hold core temperature steady. Each drop of sweat comes from your bloodstream, so as sweating continues, blood volume gradually falls and the heart works harder. Most people lose roughly 0.5–1.5 liters (about 17–50 oz) per session; a simple before-and-after weigh-in (about one liter per kilogram lost) tells you your own rate.

Sweat is mostly water and sodium, with smaller amounts of chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. For most healthy people on a balanced diet, normal meals replace what’s lost. Longer sessions, multiple rounds, heavy sweating, or sauna after hard exercise are when an electrolyte drink or a balanced meal afterward helps most — and hydration is about balance, not volume: replacing large sweat losses with only plain water can, rarely, dilute blood sodium.

Two persistent myths, corrected. Sweat is not your main route of detoxification — that work is done by the liver and kidneys; sweating removes only trace amounts of some substances and exists to regulate temperature. And a sauna does not “burn as many calories as running several miles”; heat raises energy use only modestly. A sauna complements activity — it does not replace it.

Heat also nudges glucose metabolism: rising core temperature and circulation can increase glucose uptake into muscle through insulin-independent pathways, and repeated heat therapy is being studied for effects on insulin sensitivity — though results are mixed and adaptations tend to develop over weeks, not from one session. If you take insulin or glucose-lowering medication, monitor how you respond and discuss regular sauna use with your provider.

Why it gets easier

Heat acclimation over time

If your first session feels hard, that’s expected — and it changes. With repeated exposure your body acclimates: sweating begins earlier and increases, sweat becomes more dilute as glands conserve sodium, plasma volume expands to support circulation, and your heart rate at a given heat load drops. This is why experienced users tolerate longer or hotter sessions comfortably. Like strength training, the adaptation happens through consistent, repeatable exposure followed by recovery — not by pushing every session to the limit.

How to prepare for your first session

  • Start well hydrated. Drink across the day rather than gulping a large amount right before. Pale-yellow urine suggests you’re ready; dark yellow means drink more first.
  • Consider electrolytes only if needed. Plain water suits most first sessions; sodium is the main mineral lost. Whole foods — yogurt, fruit, nuts, vegetables, eggs — replace electrolytes well after longer sessions.
  • Don’t enter very hungry or very full. A light snack 60–90 minutes before is well tolerated. Avoid the sauna right after a large meal, when digestion and cooling compete for blood flow.
  • Wear little, especially in an incandescent sauna. Heavy fabric absorbs and blocks radiant energy before it reaches your skin, so lightweight shorts or a swimsuit let more light and heat through.
  • Remove metal jewelry. Metal conducts heat and can become uncomfortably warm.
  • A sauna hat is optional. In hot-air saunas a felt or wool hat slows heat gain to the scalp for comfort; in an incandescent sauna it also blocks radiant light to the head, so it’s a comfort-versus-exposure choice.
  • Shower first. Clean skin is more comfortable and keeps the sauna hygienic for everyone.
  • Mind your medications. Diuretics, blood-pressure drugs, insulin and other glucose-lowering medicines, and some antidepressants or anticholinergics change how you respond to heat — check with your provider.
  • Set realistic expectations. Some sweat in five minutes, some in twenty; some leave energized, some sleepy. All can be normal. The best long-term users build a consistent routine, not the highest tolerance.
Inside the sauna

Your first session, minute by minute

Before you close the door, check in: are you well hydrated, rested, feeling well, free of alcohol, and comfortable with today’s temperature? If so, sit down, relax, and breathe slowly. The first five minutes are mostly quiet — your skin warms and circulation adapts before sweat appears, so don’t judge the session by how fast you sweat. From five to fifteen minutes the cooling system works harder: sweating builds, breathing may deepen, muscles relax, and many people feel warmth and ease settle in. Breathe slowly through your nose when you can; if you can’t comfortably control your breathing, it’s time to cool down.

Position matters. In a hot-air sauna, heat rises — beginners are usually comfortable on a lower bench. In an infrared or incandescent sauna, radiant intensity falls quickly with distance (the inverse-square relationship), so a few inches farther from the lamps meaningfully changes exposure; let your body adapt rather than crowding the heat. Comfort produces a better session than maximum heat.

Know when to end the session

Warm skin, sweating, a higher heart rate, relaxed muscles, mild fatigue, and flushing are all expected. Leave the sauna immediately if you notice any of the following — they mean your body is no longer compensating comfortably:

  • Dizziness, faintness, or blurred vision
  • Nausea, confusion, or trouble concentrating
  • Chest pain or shortness of breath beyond comfortable
  • Palpitations unusual for you
  • A sudden sense that the heat has become intolerable

Ending early is good judgment, not failure. Avoid alcohol before or during a session, and skip the sauna if you feel unwell.

After the heat

Cooling down and recovery

Your session isn’t over when you open the door — heart rate stays up, vessels stay dilated, sweating continues, and core temperature is still elevated. This recovery window is where much of the adaptation happens, so treat it as part of the practice. Stand up slowly: dilated vessels plus gravity can briefly drop blood pressure and leave you lightheaded; if that happens, sit back down for a minute. Let some sweat evaporate to keep cooling, and rehydrate gradually over the next hour rather than all at once.

A cold shower or plunge is a classic Finnish tradition and can feel invigorating as skin vessels constrict and norepinephrine rises — but it’s optional; the evidence that contrast therapy adds long-term benefit beyond sauna alone is still developing. Start gentle if you try it. Afterward, a balanced meal (protein, produce, and complex carbohydrates) covers recovery; there is no special “sauna diet.” Many people also report better sleep after an evening session, plausibly because the post-heat drop in core temperature mirrors the body’s natural pre-sleep cooling — give yourself time to cool and rehydrate before bed.

Building a sauna routine

One session is enjoyable; the studied adaptations come from regular use. Population research from Finland linking frequent sauna use with cardiovascular outcomes involved people who used the sauna several times weekly for years — observational, so it can’t prove cause and effect, but it points to consistency. A gentle on-ramp: weeks 1–2, 10–15 minutes, two to three times a week, focused on learning your responses; weeks 3–4, 15–20 minutes, three to four times a week, watching hydration and recovery; long term, many enjoy 20–30 minutes several times a week, though shorter or more frequent works too. The best routine is the one you can maintain.

First sauna session questions

How long should my first sauna session be?

Start short — often 10–15 minutes — and let comfort rather than the clock guide you. Some people sweat within five minutes and others take twenty; neither is better. Extend gradually over weeks as your body acclimates.

Should I drink water during the session?

For sessions under about 20 minutes most healthy people don't need to drink inside the sauna — start hydrated and rehydrate gradually afterward. For longer sessions or multiple rounds, sip cool (not ice-cold) water between rounds.

Is sweating a lot a sign it's working?
