Heavy sweating means fluid and electrolyte losses — not just water loss. That one sentence, taken seriously, fixes most of what people get wrong about sauna hydration: the headaches, the post-session wooziness, and the water-only rehydration that never quite lands.
Sweat is your plasma’s water carrying dissolved minerals out through the skin — sodium and chloride in the largest amounts, with potassium, magnesium, and calcium in smaller quantities. A vigorous sauna session can cost a pound or more of sweat; stack it on a workout and the losses compound. Replace only the water and you dilute what minerals remain — which is why “I drank plenty” can still end in a headache.
Movement in heat — hot yoga, an Exercise Sauna session, or a workout followed by sauna — deserves the athlete’s version of all this: fluids before, during, and after, minerals with the recovery meal, and honest respect for how much a double sweat costs (full timing: sauna after a workout).
I learned this lesson as a headache. Years ago I was drinking plain water by the quart around my daily sessions and still finishing days foggy — classic diluted-mineral hydration. A pinch of mineral salt in my afternoon water and properly salted meals ended it within a week, and that experience is half the reason Healthy Salt is in my product line at all: I needed it first.
Enough to return to pale-straw urine over the following hours — for most people that is roughly a tall glass or two after a normal session, more after sauna plus exercise. Thirst plus the gauges beats any fixed number.
They rehydrate, though many carry sugar and dyes you may not want. Water plus mineral salt and a normal meal does the same job more cleanly for most sessions.
The classic causes are fluid loss and mineral dilution — too little water, or water without electrolytes. Arrive hydrated, rehydrate with minerals, and shorten sessions while your body adapts.
