Why Are My Hamstrings Tight?
By Eileen Durfee, inventor & Nationally Certified Spinal Fitness Specialist
If your hamstrings feel tight no matter how much you stretch, the tightness itself may not be the problem — it may be a symptom of something the stretching never touches.
Muscles often tighten to protect an unstable structure. When the pelvis and lumbar curve are not well controlled, the nervous system can hold the hamstrings tight as a brake — a way to limit motion it does not trust. Stretch that muscle and the body, sensing the same instability, simply tightens it again. The tightness returns because its job is not done.
When hamstring reach improves quickly after posture and pelvic-control work, it suggests the tightness was largely postural — a response to structure, not a true short muscle. That is why restoring the curve and control often frees the hamstrings more lastingly than stretching alone.
The 5-step Spinal Fitness system restores the curves that carry load.
