Kyphosis (Rounded Upper Back): Why It Happens and How to Fix It
By Eileen Durfee, inventor & Nationally Certified Spinal Fitness Specialist
A rounded upper back — often called excess kyphosis, a hunched posture, or the start of a “dowager’s hump” — is one of the most visible posture changes. But it is usually the middle of a chain, not where the problem begins.
The thoracic spine has a natural backward curve (kyphosis); the issue is excess of it. When the pelvis tips and the lumbar curve flattens, the upper back rounds further to keep you balanced — and the head drifts forward on top. Trying to hold the upper back straight by effort fights a base that keeps pulling it round.
The 5-step Spinal Fitness system restores the curves that carry load.
