Vibration and shock are the filament’s enemies: keep guards on, move the lamp gently, let bulbs cool before transport, and screw them in snug — never forced. Operating cost, for the curious: a four-bulb fixture draws roughly one kilowatt-hour per hour of operation; multiply by your electric rate for the true price of a session.
Three very different devices are sold under the word infrared, and the difference starts at the emitter itself. Which one you are looking at explains nearly everything that follows: how a session feels, what you can do while you are in it, and what happens years later when the output finally fades.
A filament running white hot inside red-tinted glass emits a continuous spread of energy all at once: visible red, then near infrared, then mid and far infrared. One simple part produces the whole span, and that energy crosses the air and lands on skin directly — which is why a lamp session feels like standing in sunlight through a window rather than sitting in hot air. Distance is the dose control: users sit about 18 to 30 inches from the bulb surfaces and rotate through a session so exposure stays even. A far infrared panel is a heating element — carbon, ceramic or a printed film — sealed behind a solid fascia and normally built into a cabinet wall. It runs far cooler than a filament, so its output sits at the long-wavelength end and carries no visible glow, warming a broad area gently instead of a small area intensely. Its advantages are real and worth saying plainly: the warmth is even and undemanding, there is nothing bright in front of you so your eyes can stay closed for the whole session, a cabinet can be brought up to temperature and left to hold it, and a panel asks nothing of you while you sit. An LED array is a grid of small diodes soldered to circuit boards, each diode emitting a narrow band of wavelengths. A red light LED panel is therefore built around a few chosen wavelengths rather than a continuous spectrum, and it turns most of its energy into light while giving off very little radiant heat — deliberately. That is the appeal: a short light session in a cool room, with the array running quietly and the room temperature unchanged. It is also the honest reason an LED array belongs in a different conversation from a sauna. The warmth is the part LEDs are engineered to leave out, so an LED session and a heat session are two separate things a person might want, and plenty of people want both.
In a lamp sauna the emitter is a screw-in part you own outright. When output fades you let the fixture cool, unscrew the old bulbs, fit a fresh matched set and carry on — no technician, no service ticket, no crating an appliance up and shipping it away. Keep a spare set on the shelf and a burnout costs you a few minutes instead of a week. The division follows the same logic: the lamp fixture itself carries a lifetime warranty, and the bulbs are the one part designed to be renewed — ordered as the North American bulb set or the international set to match your system voltage.
In a panel cabinet or an LED array the emitters are the appliance. Panel elements are wired into the cabinet body; LEDs are soldered to boards behind a lens. When a zone stops working or the output drops off, the path forward runs through the manufacturer — a warranty claim, a replacement module, sometimes a service visit. In fairness, that is a trade many owners are happy with, because the flip side is years of use with nothing to buy and nothing to handle. The question is simply which side of the trade suits you: a consumable you can source and fit in minutes, or a sealed unit you never touch until the day something goes wrong.
Whichever you land on, two habits carry across all three: protect your eyes in front of any bright emitter (IR Guardian glasses), and ask the manufacturer to show you its third-party test reports — this one included. They are different devices. The heat lamp is a glowing filament producing a continuous spectrum plus the radiant heat that makes a sauna session a sauna session; an LED panel is an array of diodes tuned to narrow bands of light and engineered to stay cool. Both are useful, and they answer different questions.
The fixture is built and tested around incandescent heat lamps at its rated voltage, socket and wattage, and it is those matched sets that deliver the heat the design is for. Fit the specified bulb sets and the lamp performs as intended.
The lamp radiates the moment the filaments light, so warmth reaches your skin as soon as you sit down at your chosen distance. A panel cabinet works the other way round, bringing the whole enclosure up over a preheat period before the session begins — steadier once it is there, slower to get started.
