Healthy salt and hydration
Sodium is not merely seasoning. As the predominant extracellular mineral, it strongly influences the volume of fluid outside your cells, and it participates in nerve depolarization, muscle contraction, nutrient absorption, and acid-base balance. One well-established pathway — the sodium-glucose cotransporter (SGLT1) — links sodium and glucose transport in the intestine so that water follows across the gut lining; this is the basis of oral rehydration. Under the right conditions, a properly formulated mix of water, sodium, and a little glucose can improve fluid absorption. That does not mean everyone needs electrolytes every day, or that a more concentrated drink hydrates better — an overly concentrated drink can actually pull water into the gut.
Because sweat sodium varies widely between people (visible salt crystals suggest higher losses, though only lab testing quantifies it), electrolyte replacement is most useful after prolonged or repeated sessions, salty sweating, hot-weather activity, or heat combined with exercise. Healthy Salt is a convenient source of its listed minerals for those situations — it is not necessary after every short session, and it is not a cure for cramps, a detoxifier, or a substitute for medical guidance. People with kidney disease, heart failure, adrenal disorders, or salt-sensitive hypertension, or anyone on a clinician-directed sodium restriction, should seek individualized advice before deliberately increasing sodium.
